Spinel Information
Spinel is a durable, hard gemstone with beautiful clarity and
red spinel offers a wonderful and affordable alternative to ruby.
Some of the worlds largest and most famous “rubies” are really
spinels, such as the “Black Prince’s Ruby” and the 361 carat “Timur
Ruby” in the English crown jewels. Spinels may be blue, pink,
orange, lavender but red is the most valued.
The main sources of spinel are Myanmar (Burma) and Sri Lanka,
although Vietnam can produce some exquisite orange/pinks. Africa
and Madagascar are also important sources.
A good quality 1 carat red spinel can retail for over $1000
USD (Newman, 2003). Fine blue spinels are rare and can retail for
over $2000 USD per carat (Newman, 2003)
