Ruby Information
The ruby, together with the sapphire, are members of the corundum
group, which is the mineralogical name for
aluminium
oxide that crystallised into gemstones a long time ago as a result
of pressure and heat at a great depth. Chromium is responsible
for the red colour in the corundum.
Dealers have
argued that a strong red fluorescence is desirable and that op-grade
stones should have a minimal amount of black, gray or brown.
Their colour should also look good in any light.
Mogok and Burma and recognised as the most significant locations for
the highest quality rubies. However, that does not necessarily
discount the quality gemstones found in Thailand, Madagascar, Africa
and Vietnam .
