Gemstone Care Information
It is vital that you look after your
gemstones. It is necessary to understand the particular
nuances of each gemstone to ensure you do not harm it in any way.
Whilst many gemstones are robust and durable in nature they are
still susceptible to damage if mistreated.
Many gemstones are susceptible to
thermal shock - sudden temperature changes. These include
emerald, garnet, kunzite, opal, peridot, quartz, tanzanite, topaz
and tourmaline. Laying in the hot sun and then diving into a
cool water pool could be sufficient to cause the gemstones to crack
or shatter.
Heat is generally best avoided,
especially amethyst, emerald, kunzite, malachite, opal and red
tourmaline. The heat may make amethyst, kunzite and red
tourmaline fade and could cause the other stones to crack.
The safest way to clean a gemstone is
to wash it in lukewarm water using a mild liquid soap or detergent
that contains no ammonia. Dry the gem with a soft lint-free
cloth. Some jewellers use an ultrasonic cleaner that vibrates
liquid to remove dirt and grime but many gems should not be exposed
to this cleaning method. Seek advice before using an
ultrasonic on your gemstones.
Be gentle, be careful and treat your
gemstones with respect and they will provide you and your family
with years of joy and pleasure.
